MAKEOVER MOVIE

Dir. Sue Ding. A pop culture essay film on the makeover movies we grew up loving—and all the ways they taught us that we needed to fix ourselves. Featuring clips from nearly a hundred films, Makeover Movie immerses us in the candy-colored and kinetic world of the makeover montage. Alongside these iconic images, women of color and queer women share personal reflections on the racialized, heteronormative, and contradictory beauty standards at the core of the movie makeover.

Makeover Movie premiered at DOC NYC in 2022 and was featured in Sight and Sound’s “Best Video Essays of 2022.”

I AM

Dir. Jessica Chaney. I AM tackles the issue of mental health in the African-American community with candid and revealing interviews with five Black women who speak about their journey with Anxiety Disorder. Angela, Grae, Angel, Santyria, and Chloe tell their stories about their challenges with Anxiety Disorder and the remarkable ways they cope as they face unique cultural and societal issues.

FIRELIGHT: HOMEGROWN

The Homegrown project is a regional short-film initiative that Firelight oversees in partnership with PBS and the Center for Asian American Media. The goal of this first series is to highlight filmmakers of color from the American Midwest and narratives that illuminate the living histories, cultures and prospective futures of the region.

Future Visions: Homegrown premiered at the 2023 Cleveland Film Festival.

LIQUOR STORE DREAMS

Dir. So Yun Um. Tracing back to the ‘92 LA uprisings to the current day BLM movement, Liquor Store Dreams is an intimate portrait of two Korean American children of liquor store owners who set out to bridge generational divides with their immigrant parents in Los Angeles.

Liquor Store Dreams premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival.

EXPANDING SANCTUARY

Dir. Kristal Sotomayor. Immigrant mother Linda Hernandez emerges as a community leader during the historic campaign to end the sharing of the Philadelphia police database with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Expanding Sanctuary tells a rarely told story about a Latinx immigrant community’s successful journey to change legislation and protect families.

HIDDEN CITY

Dir. Karen Elizabeth Price. Hidden City is a psychological mystery featuring Annabeth Gish that's set in our age of political anxiety and culminates at a real-life democracy march. Mary Portman, a travel writer who explores lesser-known features of US cities, stumbles upon a voting-related crime in progress. In an effort to expose the scandal, she joins with a prominent journalist before realizing that her quest for truth has been a hall of mirrors.
